A study by the US National Commission on Sleep Disorders in 1988 found that drowsiness was a factor in about half of all traffic accidents and 36% of them were fatal. According to the Department of Transport, Environment and the Regions, 20% of road accidents in UK that lead to death and serious injury are caused by drowsiness or sleep disorders. As per the estimates of U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), annually, 0.1 million police-reported accidents are due to drowsiness or fatigue. The federal Department of Transportation estimates that each year 0.2 million reported automobile accidents are sleep-related.
