Tips for Better Sleep

We spend one third of our lives sleeping. That’s a long time, isn’t it? It makes sense that we would want to get the best sleep possible. For anyone who has ever suffered problems like insomnia or constant fatigue and sleepiness, the issue of better sleep can be a frustrating one.

Insomniacs may lie in bed, tossing and turning restlessly. The harder they “try” to fall asleep, the higher the anxiety climbs. This makes falling asleep virtually impossible. A variation of this problem is true for those who are excessively tired. They may faithfully climb into bed early, fall asleep, and wake up tired because they were snoring and needed to get better sleep.

Is getting better sleep something that we can choose? Do we have control over the quality of our night’s rest? The answer is “yes” and “no”. While it’s true that some people have sleep disorders that may need medical evaluation and attention, there are things that you can do in order to promote better sleep.

The first thing has to do with routines. It’s best to have a standard time when you wake up in the morning and go to bed at night. Incorporating something relaxing into the end of your routine can also promote better sleep. A fragrant soak in a bubble bath or thirty minutes curled up on the couch with a novel are both great options.

If you have trouble sleeping, or find that you are wishing for better sleep, you may need to watch what you are consuming. Don
’t’ eat close to bedtime. Definitely avoid soft drinks, caffeine or alcoholic beverages in the evening.

Incorporate some exercise into your daily routine. There is nothing quite like a good jog or a round of aerobics to get your body good and tired. Make sure not to do this right before bedtime, however, because this could boost your energy. You want to finish up your exercise at least two hours before bedtime, and then take a long hot shower or better yet, a relaxing soak in the tub.

Remember what the term “bedroom” means. You need to use your bedroom to sleep in (and have sex in). Don’t watch TV in your room. Don’t talk on the phone in your room. Experts say that this can have a negative impact on your sleep patterns.

Last but not least, one way to promote better sleep is to have the proper bedding. Just like your feet will be sore at the end of the day if you wear cheap, non-supportive shoes, your body isn’t going to feel great if you’re not sleeping on the proper bedding. While you don’t need to cripple your bank account purchasing bedding items, it’s not a bad idea to spend a little money as an investment in better sleep. Make sure your mattress is comfortable. Take care in choosing your pillow. Make sure you buy one that is firm enough or soft enough to suit your own individual preferences. With any luck, these tips will help you enjoy.
